![]() ![]() Growing Volunteer Developer CorpsSo, Badger is not remotely the only person I need to call out as being absolutely indispensable. Any credit for my "singular vision" on the game is doing him a major disservice, but he's a quiet sort of guy when it comes to taking credit, so I wanted to take this chance to call him out in particular. This game wouldn't exist in anything like the state it does now without Badger. Not to mention all the bugfixes, balance tweaks, and. Some of your favorite UI detail screens, like metal flows? Badger. Some of the most brilliant and devious things that the AI has in this game compared to the first one? Badger. Not only did he single-handedly conceive of and implement the nanocaust and macrophage, but he also did the dark spire and marauder impelementations, among many, many other things. What happened next was essentially us getting a developer - volunteer, no less - who contributed as much to the design of the game as I did, in my opinion. After a while I was essentially like "so, do you just want source code access, given how much you're doing here?" Because he had started doing some mods - nanocaust and macrophage, at the time, IIRC - and it was clear he would be less hand-tied if he had more access. When a lot of other people were just bouncing off the game and waiting around for Keith LaMothe and I to figure things out on our own - understandable, really - Badger was there providing really key insight and ideas.īut that was barely the start for him. For a lot of the first year, he was responsible for something like 80% of the bug reports and feature ideas on our idea tracker. You have this guy to thank as much as me or Keith for this game existing.īadger has been involved since the kickstarter, with questions and comments and key insights. MVP Award: BadgerBadgerThis section is long, and in some ways tangential, but if you read it you'll understand why I've put it here so prominently.

![]() Alongside the bow you also have an eagle, who can hold you aloft when you jump, and can be upgraded by collecting gems, to flap its wings taking you higher. Pick your own route and run! The world is your luge track, twisting and swooping through canyon and forest. Instead you have a special mask you can wear that stains the world blue and makes your objectives glow red. This is why the landscapes are so big, and why there's no fast travel and no pause menu map to help orient you. The thing is, you do this at speed, as you're already boosting, rushing over the landscape, the grass a wet blur beneath you, the lines of the earth becoming ramps and channels. ![]() Anyway, that's the rhythm of the game, aim, fire, boost. I also don't really understand heat engines, so the analogy was one big mistake. ![]() So basically you're a kind of heat engine, taking energy in with the right trigger and transferring it to the left trigger where it turns into speed. More: hitting the target gives you boost juice that allows you to run, which you do with the left trigger. This stuff takes time to write down and explain, but in the game it is instantaneous - fleeting yet easy to parse, no gap needed for understanding. In truth, when it's half-red you can release and hit the target. When it's all red - less than a second - you can release and hit the target. You squeeze the right trigger to select a target and a square around it starts to turn from white to red. Lock-on is generous to the point at which it becomes clear that this is not a game about aiming. Scattered around the world are little diamond shapes hovering in the air. I have never played a game quite like it. Standard video game fare, but The Pathless manages to be sparse and winningly odd all the same. You have to purify a bunch of corrupted guardians who take the form of mega-animals, and then tackle the baddy who's behind all this, travelling upwards from one huge stretch of land to the next as you go. Haven't they always? You play a lone archer in this vast wilderness tasked with putting things back together again. The world is in danger and the ancient gods have fallen. Availability: Out November 12th on PC and PS4 and iOS as part of Apple Arcade, out on November 19th on PS5 in the UK (November 12th in the US). ![]() And inside? You know, the Pathless is alright. A bright scarlet blot on a cold blue landscape. And when I emerged again, the red storm that stalks you across these huge maps was waiting right outside, right below me, a boiling angry Jupiter, threads of toxic cloud churning within it. I would have wandered up here for no reason at all. I went inside and did some video game stuff, but mainly I just enjoyed the fact of where I was, the roof of the world, the wind billowing through tiled windows and the place I'd come from a dizzying sprawl far below me. Yesterday I climbed a blasted cliff of ice and ancient stone to find a small temple at the top, built along a narrow ridge. But when you're on the ground or in the air the game often feels endless: clear and spacious, slopes and contours and steppes in every direction. You can race through this whole adventure and be done in four hours, probably less. And I mean size in a very specific sense. It's the sheer size of The Pathless that I love. Vast maps bring out the best in this sparse yet memorable adventure. ![]() a person regarded as having an innate gift or talent for a particular task or activity: she was a natural for the sort of television work required of her. relating to earthly or unredeemed human or physical nature as distinct from the spiritual or supernatural realm. ∎ of or relating to the notes and intervals of the harmonic series. ∎ (of a brass instrument) having no valves and able to play only the notes of the harmonic series above a fundamental note. Other Twitter clients in the past tried to play around with this concept of turning lists into timelines, but none of them got close to today’s implementation in Tweetbot. I can go back at any time, choose lists - even create new ones and add users to them thanks to Tweetbot’s full list management. Let’s say I want to temporarily switch to a timeline based on a list collecting people that tweet about RIM: I tap on the timeline button, select the list, and there my main timeline is replaced by the RIM folks. Here’s how I described it in my review of Tweetbot 1.0 two years ago: ![]() The possibility to turn the main timeline tab into a Twitter list has always been one of Tweetbot’s unique features. Tweetbot 3.1, available today on the App Store, improves upon last month’s major release by bringing back some old features of Tweetbot 2.x and introducing new ones, always taking advantage of iOS 7’s design and structure in interesting ways. Tweetbot for iPhone may have grown up, but it hasn’t forgotten about the features and design decisions that made it a powerful and popular Twitter client among iOS users for the past two years. ![]() Using it massively increases his damage, Blade Mode speed, and the rate at which enemies' armor is broken.
